Music includes common elements such as pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (such as tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the color of a musical sound). Music touches our lives in many ways and effects us with positive and negative emotions. It makes us laugh, dance, cry, sing loudly, reminisce, reflect, and find joy in the words and music we hear.
In some ways, music is a lot like literature. It can be pleasing, enlightening, even life-changing. A great song, like a great book, affects the listener in unanticipated ways and resonates long after the music has ceased.
